Barbara Y. Blanton Installed as President

Blanton_Barbara-REGBarbara is married to Dr. Terrell D. Blanton, an otolaryngologist and they have three children and six grandchildren. She is originally from Mississippi however, she and her husband moved to Shelbyville, TN in 1997 to be near their daughter and her family and their first grandchild.

Blanton is involved in many civic, social and religious organizations.

She is a 1976 graduate of Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi where she was a member of Beta Beta Beta and received the Biology Research Award for her paper on Hodgkins Disease.

She was active in the Mississippi State Medical Association Alliance and served as president of this organization 1984-1985. It was during this time with the medical alliance that she developed an active interest in government and legislation.

Blanton continued to be involved in governmental affairs and decided to run for public office in 1987. She was elected to the Mississippi State Senate and served from 1988-1992.

As the wife of a physician, she developed a keen interest in improving the quality of health care. She has coordinated workshops and seminars on child abuse, bullying, teen parenting, scoliosis screening, organ donation, and infant/child automobile restraints.

Barbara’s husband served in the U.S. Navy for about 12 years and the family lived outside the state.

When they returned to Mississippi, she focused her volunteer efforts on the needs of children and adolescents.

Since moving to Tennessee, Blanton has continued to be involved in community service and the political process. She served four years as Vice-Chairman and then four years as Chairman of the Bedford County Republican Party. She served eight years as District 14 Committeewoman on the Republican State Executive Committee. She is Past President of the Bedford County Republican Women.

She is Past President of the Tennessee Medical Association Alliance and serves as President of the Bedford County Medical Association Alliance.

Blanton serves as President-elect of Southern Medical Association Alliance. She has served as Vice-President of Doctors’ Day Secretary and Councilor of SMAA. She is a Charter Member of the Society of 1924.

She is actively involved in the Rotary Club of Shelbyville and Rotary District 6780. She is a Past President of the Rotary Club of Shelbyville and Past Assistant Governor of District 6780. She is a graduate of the District 6780 Leadership Academy.  She currently serves as Awards Chairman, District 6780 and serves on the International Service Committee.

She and her husband are active members of First Baptist Church in Shelbyville, TN.
